Workshop on Menstrual Hygiene Awareness
Date- 5th July, 2025
Classes VI-VIII (Girls)
A workshop on Menstrual Hygiene Awareness was organised on Saturday, 5th July 2025, for the girls of Classes VI to VIII. The purpose of the session was to create awareness about the physical and emotional changes during puberty, with special focus on menstruation, hygiene practices, and removing the stigma attached to it. The discussion began with an explanation of changes during adolescence such as breast development, growth of body hair, increase in height and weight, the onset of menstruation, and mood variations. Students were also informed about the menstrual cycle—its onset between 9 to 14 years of age, its monthly duration of 28–35 days, and the 3–7 day flow caused by the shedding of the uterine lining.
The facilitator emphasised the importance of menstrual hygiene, including the correct use of sanitary pads, changing them every 4–6 hours, washing the area with clean water and mild soap, wearing clean underwear, and proper handwashing. Safe disposal methods were explained, such as wrapping pads before discarding, avoiding flushing, using bins with lids, and incinerators where available. The girls were guided on important do’s like changing pads regularly, keeping track of cycles, eating healthy, and consulting a doctor when needed. They were also reminded of the don’ts—never using the same pad for long hours, not feeling embarrassed about periods, avoiding open disposal, and not using unclean cloth.
The session was interactive and addressed many doubts. Students participated enthusiastically and felt more confident about managing their health. It proved to be a meaningful and informative experience. As the facilitator aptly concluded:
“Breaking the silence around menstruation is the first step towards breaking the stigma.”
